Caty & Blue

I would like to share some photographs from a recent shoot of Caty and her horse, Blue.
It was a typical winter sunset in Johannesburg. The sun was warm and plenty of dust in the air as we eagerly await the rainy season to start. This does however help to create soft warm light.
I really enjoy working with people that love their animals. So many claim to love them but one can quickly tell the pretenders from the true horsemen. Caty is gentle and quiet around her horse. This helps to create pictures that tell a story.
Appaloosa Horses
The Appaloosa is best known for its distinctive, preferred leopard complex spotted coat. Spotting occurs in several overlay patterns on one of several recognized base coat colours. There are three other distinctive, “core” characteristics: mottled skin, striped hooves, and eyes with a white sclera.

Tarryn & Teneile

Two sisters with their babies and a horse… Lots of squeaky noises coming from me and Tarryn’s husband. This was a first for me.
Sometimes it is quite difficult to keep a horse’s attention, especially if they are not too interested in your agenda. I had bigger problems than that. Here I had to direct two ladies, 2 babies and a horse. Now that would be easy if the moms could stop giggling and if the babies understood my commands! It actually wasn’t that bad. I laughed quite a bit myself.
Denise & her Friesian Family

I love heavy horses and I recently had the privilege to photograph Denise and her 6 Friesian horses. Five mares and a young colt. She requested photographs to be taken of them as they have very recently moved to her property. They were previously on a farm and have not been handled much.
We started by trying to let one horse at a time into a camp where I would photograph the horse away from the others. However this was a lot harder than we thought as they were not too happy with the idea of being on their own – even though they could touch each other over the fence.
Friesians are known to have a mind of their own are can be very stubborn. And these beautiful mares are still very green sit was to be expected. In all fairness they behaved very well considering their history.
